thesis 与 dissertation 的区别

虽然在一些学校thesis 和 dissertation 可能会被认为是相同的或混为一谈，但这两个词确实是有区别的，而且这两个词的用法在英式英语与美式英语中并不相同。

在美式英语中，一般用thesis 泛指所有学位论文，尤指硕士论文 (a master's degree)，而用dissertation 特指博士论文(a PhD)。下面是《美国传统英语词典》的定义。

thesis: a dissertation advancing an original point of view as a result of research, especially as a requirement for an academic degree.

dissertation: a lengthy, formal treatise especially one written by a candidate for a doctoral degree at a university; a thesis.

英式英语恰好相反。在英式英语中，thesis 特指博士论文，而dissertation 被用于泛指所有学位论文。下面是《柯林斯高阶英语词典》对这两个词的定义。

A thesis is a long piece of writing based on your own ideas and research that you do as part of a university degree, especially a higher degree such as a PhD.

虽然硕士学位论文与博士论文在结构上都是包含引言，论文主体，结论和文献等部分。但前者一般是对研究的汇编，证明你对你的研究生课程中的信息学习很熟悉。而博士论文是你在博士课程中为你的领域贡献新知识、理论或实践的机会。关键是提出一个全新的概念，发展它并证明其价值。在文章的篇幅上，博士论文要长得多，通常要达到200至300页的长度。
